Varsity Acres Presbyterian, in Calgary, is the ideal sanctuary for Phoenix Organ's AcoustiCube speakers. The existing speaker chambers at the front and centre of the chancel area house the woofers and the cubes hang from a laminated ceiling beam, which is the perfect distance from the wall to take advantage of reflective sound qualities. In every case, where the AcoustiCube speakers have been installed, the result has been a non-directional sound with a 360 degree dispersion, as with pipes.  In most cases, it is a far more satisfying and musical experience than the sound produced by standard, directional, forward-firing speakers.

The organ for Varsity Acres is three manuals and 47 stops, 9 audio channels and 4 specifications. As with all Phoenix Organs, the stain colour of speakers and console was custom matched to the church furnishings.

Phoenix Organ’s western Canadian rep, Steve Koning, worked with Varsity Acres organist and committee through the complete project from start to finish and aided  Phoenix staff with the installation.

Organist Wayne Hubbard is pictured, at bottom right, doing a trial run of the new instrument.
